Jenny and K’s visit

we were so excited when jenny and koutsunis started planning their trip to denver! but my goodness was it an ordeal to get out here: 1. their tickets were accidentally booked for 10:30 pm, rather than am.  2. they weren’t able to get on an earlier standby plane, but their luggage did!  3. when they tried to get on their original flight, they realized that they’d been wrongly taken off the flight and the plane was now overbooked.  4. after everybody else had boarded the plane, jenny and k were told they had 2 first class seats for them {thank goodness!}.

so unfortunately jenny and k were here for a shorter time than planned, but we fit a whole lot in. plus, that means they’ll have to come back again to finish out their original trip!

first, we headed up to georgetown…

jenny {jennyevelynphoto.com} took this one for us. we’re standing on the frozen georgetown lake!

yep. those are cars driving on the lake! these were a few subarus that were making their own course, while there were serious racers just a few yards away.

according to some of the people racing on the lake, the ice needs to be at least 8 in. deep to drive a car on it. when we were there, the ice was about 36 in. deep, supposedly thick enough to safely drive a semi-truck over it! check out this link to watch a video of ice racing. it was incredible being there in person!

later that day we headed to boulder, and hiked the settlers’ park trail. jenny took a few pics of us. david has a hard time being serious, so of course he had to point to the heavens while dipping me…

i took these of jenny and k as we were just about to make it to the ridge.

jenny took this one of david as he was leading the way back down. it was quite an icy/slushy trail, and we were all slipping and sliding trying to keep our footing. it’s actually a minor miracle that none of us got injured! next time, snow shoes might be a good idea…

the next day we headed out to red rocks, and jenny took these snowy pics. although the snow is a bit deceiving, it was about 65 degrees out that day. clearly, david is ready for a bit of spring.

and as we headed to the airport to drop them off, this was jenny and k’s farewell image:

interesting, isn’t it? the blue mustang is actually quite controversial in denver. some people love it, some people hate it – but i guess that’s the way most art is. interesting fact: the sculptor {luis jimenez} was killed when part of his unfinished mustang fell and crushed him. creepy, but true. the mustang will be standing in front of d.i.a. until at least 2013.

mom’s visit

mom made it out to denver this week! of course, she had to pick one of the coldest weeks we’ve had this winter, but we still managed to get out quite a bit. the first day she was here we headed up to georgetown and had brunch at the happy cooker. i had bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, and a super huge waffle with fresh strawberries and whipped cream – which i highly recommend! then we headed off for a super quick tour of golden, and finally we made it to boulder. after a short walk on pearl street, we visited the celestial seasonings factory for a free tour. i’m really not a huge tea fan, but i’d heard the tour was really great – especially the mint room. oh. my. goodness. my nose was so happy during the whole tour. i may not like to drink tea, but it’s ingredients sure smell amazing! then it was time for the long awaited mint room, which definitely stood up to its reputation. as soon we walked in, my eyes got glossy and i could feel the minty burn in my eyes, throat and lungs. i loved it! david was unlucky enough to get a cold a day or two before, but as soon as he walked in, he could breath again {too bad the effects only lasted while we were near the mint leaves}.

yesterday was bitter cold and ugly, but mom and i decided that all the fresh snow would be perfect for sledding. so we bundled up and headed to the hill!

this is mom on her first run. i love the third pic…she couldn’t see a thing! thankfully, it looks like she still had fun.

this morning we headed out to the same place, but it was much prettier today. clear skies as far as the eye could see.
